The Protests against the Vietnam War had an impact, but it still took years. Protests started really building in 1967 and grew each year. LBJ didn't run for reelection because of the War. Nixon campaigned to end it and only escalated it into Cambodia and Laos. 58,000 Americans and at least 2 Million Southeast Asians died before the U.S. finally withdrew. No "Dominoes" fell (the lie before the war that we had to intervene so other countries wouldn't become Communist.)
The Protest Marches, many led by Martin Luther King, for Civil Rights through the early 1960s led to LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

War was the main menu during the period between 1940 to 1970. There were many mass actions against wars but did not deter the government to stop engaging in war due to national security since the heartland might be in danger of being attacked. Intervention into the affairs of other states was prevalent and it was a time of imperialism.
