I believe I drove through some yellow paint overspray (from road work?) which has dried onto my red car. I tried to get it off using a rubber cooking spatula which put light scratches on my paint. I do I get the yellow paint off and repair the damage I have done without the expense of a paint job?

Gasoline is the only thing I know of that is effective in removing road paint---that stuff is like iron. Try a small section at a time and flush with water well. Use rubbing compound on the scratches and rewax the area....use colored wax if necessary--parts stores carry it. Hopefully, you're not through the clearcoat. Call the highway department and see what they might recommend.

I've been an insurance adjuster and an auto damage appraiser. Overspray is very difficult to deal with, and a good detail shop is like gold. Some are fly-by-night start ups that don't know what they're doing yet, especially the difficult chemicals like paint overspray.

Worst case scenario is it will need to be wet-sanded off, and the clear-coat replaced.

If you have comprehensive coverage, there's a 99% chance it's going to be covered. You'd have to have a real lousy insurer to have excluded this risk on the policy.

get a little bit of prepsol on a rag. (prepsol is a gegreaser) wipe down the area with the over spray on it, if that doesnt work get some universal thinners on a rag wipe it with that, then to get out the light scratches and buy cutting compound, give it a good buff with that and then buy polish and polish it and that should take away the scratches and paint.
