This is a tough one, but I have to go with the Tuskegee Airmen. It helped to open a few doors, not many, but a few for African-Americans in the military. They proved that African-Americans can fight just as well as whites. They showed they were not just cooks or other menial workers in the military. They never lost a bomber over hostile territory. The only air combat unit that could say that.
