the difference of 2.0 and 1.4 is .6 .... so .6 miles

the difference of 6:10 and 6:00 am is 10 minutes

ok so he ran .6 miles in 10 minutes

divide by 10

.06 miles per minute divide by 60

1/1000 of a mile per second

OR .06 X 60= 3.6 miles per hour

All you can find is how fast he ran that last 10 minutes, unless you know when he started running.
2.0 - 1.4 = 0.6 : 10 minutes is 1/6th of an hour
He ran .6 mile in 10 minutes, so he ran this part in .6 * 6 or 3.6 MPH.

I'll work this problem into a real brain teaser.

How long did he run if this was his average running speed for the entire run?
(2.0 / 3.6) = fraction of an hour he ran.
5/9 * 60 = 300/9 = 33 1/3 minutes total
This is 33 minutes and 20 seconds
He ended at 6 :10 so subtract 33 minutes and 20 seconds from this time.
If he ran this rate for the entire run, he would have started at 5 : 36 : 40, or 20 seconds before 5 : 37.
For your problem, you need to know how long it took for him to actually run the 1.4 miles to get an AVERAGE speed.

In 10 minutes he ran .6 mile; Therefore, the average would be .6/(1/6 hour)=3.6 MPH during that 10 minute stretch of time.

While it isn't inherently unhealthy for a person to run 20+ miles a day (I know of a runner who averaged over 34 a day for over a year) it is unhealthy for a 15 year old because their bones aren't fully formed. Bones have plates that don't solidify until you stop growing, this allows the bones to get larger. The constant pounding of excessive running can deform the bones and stunt their growth. As for people running across America, no a doctor wasn't present all the time.

Distance = 0 . 6 miles
Speed = 0.6 /10 miles / min = 0 .06 mile/min
Speed = 3.6 m.p.h
