I just bought an external hard drive and I was told by a friend that I should format it to NTFS, since currently it's FAT32 and supposedly NTFS is better (that's true, right?).

I'm reading stuff about partitioning the drive, but I'm not sure if I need to do it or not. There will be no operating system files on this external drive, just music and photos and stuff. This being the case- do I need a partition? If so, how big a partition do I need? Any info anyone can provide would be great appreciated here, because I'm sort of flying blind, as if you couldn't tell.

Thanks very much!

No need to go that far, if you havent used it yet, just right-click on the drive and format it in NTFS format.

NTFS is better, but it is only supported by Windows 2000 and later. If you intend to ever use this drive on a computer using Windows 98 or ME then it would not be compatible.

Partitioning is a matter of choice, but seeing as the drive is an external one, I see no need to do that. It won't change the operation, it will just split the drive up and assign more drive letters to it.

I agree that you should format your external hard drive to NTFS but there is no need to partition it.
