He lays by their bedroom door and gives me that "If I were bigger I'd eat you" look if I walk too close to it at night while they're sleeping. It's comforting to know a burgler won't get in, but has he honestly forgotten that I live here, too?

It's their instinct. Mine won't let anyone touch me when I'm sleeping.

He probably sees you as a dominant member of the pack, and the children as weaker members. It brings out his protective instincts. Don't worry, he'll still respect you in the morning.

maybe your dog feels you do bad things to your children and is trying to protect them.

Maybe he thinks you'll hurt them or that they need protecting or maybe it's just territorial ? idk My dog seems to think she owns everything in the house that is from the kitchen counters or below.
My cat does the same thing. She only likes me.

They're naturally protective, and the girls are little, and you are big.
