I bought him a 40 dollar dog bed that appears to be very comfortable. Why does he lay on the floor next to it?

Maybe he has an inferiority complex. Maybe the floor is cooler.

I think they like to feel the cold floor against their bellies. If I was covered in fur and warm all the time, the last thing I'd want to do is lay down in a warm bed!

My chocolate lab is the same way. He won't lay on a bed, towel, carpet, anything. They just like the floor for some reason.

most likely because it's cool and animals get really overheated during the summer. My cats will lie on the tile floor in the kitchen right in front of the fridge on hot days..

The hard floor is probably cooler for him, and therefore, more comfortable.

That's just what dogs do...except my dog would rather lay on my bed than hers. lol. My bro's theory is that it's to prevent static shock from laying on carpeting

Hey, HE didn't make the decision to buy the bed. Animals are used to making do with what nature gives them.
