JKR has written a series with many characters who can become important to you, you invest emotion and concern on them.
Even the "villains" like Malfoy or Snape have people interested and concerned (admit it, weren't you just a bit happy that Draco couldn't pull the trigger?).
Even a minor character like Luna is well drawn and interesting--you feel as if you know her.
That is why so many of us will be sad when we read the last word of HBP. We will have no more of a world we love, filled with people we care about.

Harry Potter is wonderful for several reasons. First, the stories suck you into this imaginary world that is so well described and wonderful that you truly wish it exists (the world of magic). Second, the stories are all about how love, friendship, courage, and bravery overcome evil. They also show that it is sometimes harder to choose the path of good and easier to be evil, but that if you persevere good will win. Third, I like that the author (J.K.Rowlings) gives these ordinary wizard kids the ability to overcome their fears and stand up against big challenges by relying on each other and their own individual strenghts. And Finally, there are some real hard life lessons (loss of a loved one for example) that are honestly portrayed.
How could they be better - only if they were real.

I like how the world of Harry Potter is so detailed, and realistic. I also like how the characters are developed to the point where they seem real, faults and all. I can completely argue random stuff about the HP universe, there aren't many loose ends(I hope, when the last book comes out!). JK Rowling is a pretty good (and interesting) author so many people like her books, even those who don't really read often. And I like books with themes too.
How it can be better? Perhaps if there were more books set in the Harry Potter universe...

I enjoy reading Harry Potter because I realize that no matter what age you are, they're enjoyable. The books can be interpreted in many different ways. The plot is excellent and there are intense and suspenseful moments, yet there are also humorous moments which creates a perfect balance. Two wands up!

at 31, I love the books. I got them to relate to my children and identify with what they were reading. Then I found I was reading ahead after the kids went to bed. I am married, I work full time and lead a pretty hectic life, much like others on this site. It was nice way to leave my life for a bit and indulge in fantasy, someone fighting a good fight and right vs. wrong. Same for the movies, I have taken the time (more than once) to sit with my kids and get lost in the magic that is Harry. It is a way to feel young agin!

the books are written in a way which makes you not only visualise everything clearly, but you become part of the story. better than watching a movie because you use you own imagination. i like the movies a lot, but i love the books because you try to puzzle out all the pieces that rowling SLOWLY gives you. they are books for all ages. my mum, sister and i are HUGE fans. my mum started reading them first. she bought the book 2 first because book 1 had sold out and brought it home. i was a little skeptical because everybody was reading them, so i thought it was a fad. my mum read it and was hooked. i picked it up and read it and wanted all the books that had been written at that point; i think only books 1 and 2 were written when we became fans. that's nearly 10 years ago!
