The year 1955 sticks in my mind, too. Certainly the changeover began in the mid-1950s, and the US automakers had switched from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground by the end of the 1950s. A few imports stayed with 6 volt systems into the 1960s, however. Volkswagen didn't switch over until 1966, and I believe the same was true of Opel. I owned a '65 Opel Kadett which had a 6 volt system.

but if you got the corvette in 1955 and got the 6 cillender it had the 6 volt , but if you got the new v8 you got the 12 volt system

not totally true all vehicles did not cross over right away. but yes the 60's was the time all US manufactures switched over to 12 volts............now wait till the 30 and 40 volt switch....its coming
