I think it's partly because when someone is "into" looks, that doesn't stop once they're partnered. So, visually stimulated people date great-looking partners, and can't help but "keep looking". Some of the happiest, most faithful relationships I've seen have been between fairly "average" looking folks who are incredibly loyal to one another.
Oh, and monogamy is neither more nor less natural for men than it is for women, contrary to popular belief. We now know that the sex drive and the amount of testosterone of BOTH men and women lowers after children are born, encouraging the couple to stick together.

the more you got the more you want. In a lot of cases, anyway. Why doesn't Bill Gates retire? Why does Jay Leno have elventy zillion cars? Why do we have fifty friggin' Burger chains selling basically the same greasebombs? Why am I wearing half a melon on my head?
We're programmed to accumulate things, money, material junk, and experiences, especially sexual experiences. Mix that with the fact that nearly everybody in the world is untrustworthy, and you have a lot of males willing to to risk everything in sight to satisfy the genetic predisposition to mate with as many fancy-looking women as they can, and not let something silly like marriage vows get in the way. And I'd say the ones that are obsessed moreso with a woman's looks than her brains and personality - and see to it that they marry one that has a heap of the former - are more, not less, likely to succumb to the directives of the little devil on their shoulders.
Maintaning Monoton...I mean monogamy, is not really a natural impulse for human males. Takes a lot of work and sacrifice to do so. Guys that think sex and physical attraction alone will sustain a relationship will get bored with doing it with the same person faster than the males that know better will. and go for some strange.
This not to say that all beautiful women are dumb. Far from it. I'm just saying whether they are or they aren't doesn't matter a whole lot to a lot of men. That's why you rarely see a Hollywood marriage that lasts more than a few weeks.
Whatever.
But, no matter what, I don't see watching Ted (Howdy Doody meets Bill Buckley) Koppel after having sex with your trophy dingbat as being much of a substitute for a relationship with an intellectual woman.

There are undoubtedly many good answers to this question, but here are a few that I can think of off the top of my head:
1) Looks aren't everything - no matter how good your mate may look, if you don't like him/her and don't get along, you'll look elsewhere;
2) People get bored - if you're not at the right time in your life to have a serious relationship, then it doesn't matter that you have a fantastic looking mate;
3) Looks don't last forever - no matter how good looking your mate may be, there will always be somebody fitter, younger, more attractive, etc. if given enough time.
The bottom line is whether or not you care about person and you're compatible, not how they look...

Looks may not be everything for some people. Their spouses may be missing some sort of aspect to their personality which makes the cheating spouse interested. Therefore the cheating spouse may search and find someone with, not only, that missing piece of personality, but with "good looks", too. Just a theory of mine. Hope this helps!

People cheat for many different reasons.
A person who cheats on a fantastic looking mate, was probably still not getting their needs met in that relationship.
Looks alone are rarely enough to satisfy without personality, intelligence, common interests, etc.
Often the one who strays is unhappy, unsatisfied, unfulfilled, and they stray to get their sexual desires and emotional needs met.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong....it just is what it is.

Usually cheating is about unmet needs of the spouse, and anger at one's spouse for not meeting these needs. Then again, some people must have others validate them as attractive sexually or some are just addicted to sex. There are so many reasons for cheating.

Makes one wonder upon what basis the "fantastic looking mate" was chosen. Does one marry a trophy spouse out of true love?

This has nothing to do with intellect. Further, it has very little to do with the partner who is being "cheated" on.
For the one who "cheats" it is all about their pleasure, their outlet or their relief from boredom.
An okay looking partner versus a great looking partner will never be a predictor for being unfaithful.

I have a guess...Do you think its because they feel like if they cheat then they have the upper hand. LIke they get nervous and jealous of the looks of their partner that when they cheat in their mind they are thinking..."well baby i still got it and I can get someone else ya know" That sort of things
