It is your social security number if you have one. You should look at your most recent tax return to find it. If however, you need to FILE a tax return for the first time as an immigrant and don't already have an SSN or TIN, you will need to apply for one. The IRS web site offers the forms. If you are applying for permanent residency or a work permit, the immigration attorney you are probably using should be able to point you in the right direction. The IRS actually wants you to be able to pay your taxes in an organized manner, so obtaining one is not that difficult.
