i don't mind cleaning the tank once a week for my res but whenever they eat, they spit their food everywhere and its causing the water to smell and dirty faster than usual. should i put the food in a basking dry area instead of the water so the food won't go everywhere? thanks in advance guys!

No. RES can't eat out of water so this would ultimately starve your turtle to death. An alternative to removing the food daily is to get a speparate feeding tank. Remove your turtle before feeding time, feed it and then 10 minutes later return it to it's normal tank. You can just use a deep dish for this but make sure that the temp is in the 70's because they won't eat if it's too cold. Not all RES will eat in separate tanks but most will.

Your turtle HAS to hunt and eat in the water.

You can make your life easier by using the right size tank (about 10 gallons per inch of shell length), a very strong filter system (about 3 times the size a fish tank needs), and the right diet.

True *last answerer* They can only eat in the water, dont try to feed them on land they cant swallow and it can harm them. Try feeding in a seperate area. A rubbermaid tub will work. Just fill it with water put your guy in there feed then when he is done put him back in his home. It helps with the mess. and a good filter will help too. My turtles befriended their goldfish and the goldfish eat whatever mess is usually left.

res can only eat food in the water...and yes they are messy eaters. just get a good filter...it definatly helps....so does a large tank...that way you dont have to clean it once a week...and probably wont smell as much either. you dont have to feed your turtles everyday...you can feed them every other day if you want...they just beg for food because they know they look cute doing it! you can also give them green leaf lettuce (depending how old they are...older turtles will give it a try but babies wont think its as tasty as fish, pellets, etc) a brine shrimp net helps too...after theyre finished eating try to scoop up the left overs floating around....its a bit tedious but helps keep the tank clean and not smelly...but it should be a BRINE SHRIMP net...its a very fine net so it catches everything! good luck!
