i want a tropical fish. what kind would be the best to get? i am looking for one that is pretty, but not really small or really big.

I would suggest getting a 2.5 gallon heated and filtered tank and housing a male betta. They aren't too large and come in many different colors. Very colorful and pretty fish.

I agree with magic man, a betta would work for you perfectly. Another fish you might want to give a try is maybe a moonlight gourami. Take a look a this picture of them http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/trich_microlepis.htm you probably want at least a 20 gallon to house them. I know you didn't want something too small, but have you considered guppies? Fancy male guppies come in beautiful colors, just look at some of these pics.

You could go out to walmart and buy a 10 gallon aquarium kit for around 40-50 bucks, stick some gravel,plant, and decor in there; and you could probably house around 5-7 male guppies happily.

well, it does depend on how much you wish to spend. you can get a 10 gallon set up without a stand for around $50 without fish. with this, you could get a few guppies and neon tetras. best thing about guppies is that they reproduce in a community tank with ease.

Get a(few) dwarf cichlid(s), they are really nice. Killifish are also quite colourful, and congo tetras are about the same size. Other tetras are quite small but look great in shoals.

sea water fish or fresh water fish?
You would probably want Nemo for sea water fish.
For fresh water buy a flowerhorn. It is believed to bring luck. This is a territorial fish, must be placed alone in an aquarium.
Goldfish have always been beautiful in aquarium.
