It used to mean that you were the kid in the graduating class with the highest grade point average. But recently some schools have been calling everyone who graduates with a 4.0 the "valedictorian." That's pathetic and phony, but it's the way we do things now. No one is allowed to be second best.
Incidentally, being the valedictorian used to mean almost automatic admission to the college of your choice. Not any more. This year several of the top colleges in the US rejected hundreds of valedictorians each. That's pretty darned competitive!

1) Get A's in everything.
2) Take as many courses that are weighted on your GPA as humanly possible.
3) Pass-fail non-weighted elective classes.
4) Find out how the system is weighted (by amount of classes, by semester, etc.) to determine whether or not you should minimize your course load (i.e. take 5 weighted classes and 0 unweighted or 6 weighted classes and 0 unweighted)
5) Start really really early and don't let others know how you're finding loopholes in the system (for example, I took a study hall freshman year which pushed me in front of those who took an unweighted elective instead and I took an extra English class in lieu of an elective junior year b/c the English class was weighted).

The way you act has nothing to do with it, unless you're bad and get suspensions from school and aren't there to make good grades. All you need to do is get good grades; better grades than everyone else. I had a 4.0 all throughout highschool and was valedictorian.

Have the highest average in your class. Best wishes . . . BUT -- don't become obsessed with it; life will show that while good grades can be somewhat important, there are much more important ingredients to happiness and success!

Get straight A's. Take a lot of honors and AP classes to add weight to your GPA.
