You have to have a working model, not just an idea.

You have to do a search to be sure nobody else has already patented your invention, or any part of it.

Then you apply for a patent.

It's theoretically possible to do all this on your own, but in reality would be very difficult without hiring a patent attorney.

These folks were recommended to me, they will do a search for approx. $500 USD including a provisional patent application.
