Most use markers at the edges of their territory, such as rocks or plants. So their might be everything between this row of rocks and that clump of plants. Some actually consider it a certain distance from a center point. Like from the top of a plant 2 feet in every direction.

as already stated fish don't do visible markings on gravel or decorations, but will case/attack a fish if it is their territory and even peaceful fish will do this if they feel threatened ex.. i used to have a plecostomus ( algae eater ) that is a very peaceful fish but it killed a discus , the reason is that during the day he hides from the light in a half ship wreck once he came out and a discus went inside the wreckage unfortunately i was there to see it happen the pleco charged the discus charged back leaving the discus no chances of escape and died but he did not continue to ram him after the first hit,
hope that clears your thoughts and good luck with what ever fish your keeping :) just be careful with aggressive fish

Peaceful fishes don't "mark their territory".

Territorial ones will bite and chase other fish out of their territory.

Any fishing line that broke off a fisherman's pole is used. The fish wrap the line around an area that resembles a fenced yard. Then hang hooks off it to catch fish they can eat. The fish are lured to the fenced in area by two swordfish engaged in fencing.

They stake out their territory and they chase any other fish that gets near it.
