I don't mean to be rude here but if you consider "Black Poets" to be racist, do you then consider the YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scouts, & Girl Scouts to be sexist. If so, we should make the words "Chinese food" and the like illegal. And let's not forget to make all restrooms unisex. No more "ladies night" either. C'mon!

Why would that be racist to check it out? I doubt you were getting dirty looks for THAT reason. It sounds like your paranoia. If you are asking if it's racist for there to be a black poets section then, no. It is important because there was a movement called the Harlem Renaissance where a lot of black poetry came from. It is important because black poetry is so different from other types of poetry that it has become its own genre within literature. You will find great poets like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovani, the list goes on! So enjoy it! Stop focusing so much on race and what others think. You are educating yourself to the experiences of others and that's a beautiful thing.
And to the obviously sick person who commented above: don't ever eat peanut butter (George Washington Carver), look at a traditional clock (Benjamin Banneker), and hopefully you'll never need open-heart surgery (Dr. Daniel Hale) because all of these things were invented by black men. And don't forget that the first female millionaire in the world was Madame CJ Walker, who also happens to be a black woman, so what were you saying?
Added: You spelled "wasting" wrong. The extra "i" is not necessary. Sorry to break it to you...you know me being black and all.

And I agree with the poster above, you are just paranoid. You have no idea why the person was looking at you that way, but you assume it was because you had a book written by blacks. Let's be intelligent people here.
People look at others dirty all the time. Everytime I walk past a white person near my residence, they refuse to speak back to me, when I speak to them. Other times, they won't even look at me. And 80% of the time they have a look on their face like their bothered.
Some times, it could be they just don't like black people, but in reality, you don't know what a person is going through or what is on their mind. For all you know, the look may not of had anything to do with you. The world doesn't revovle around us, therefore all things are not due to or about us.
Do you know how many times I might be smiling looking off in a direction and then notice people later? Or might have a grimace on my face, looking in the direction of a person that has nothing to do with my situation or thoughts? You're just being paranoid. Maybe you didn't feel right holding the book, so you think someone has a problem with it b/c you do. Just a thought.
On the Road -- Langston Hughes

This is a good quick read from Mr. Hughes if you were really interested in his writings. It's not a poem though.

i'm no longer black yet I would desire to ask your self why your instructor might even strengthen this undertaking in front of a school room of scholars. The fact seems racist & watching for the respond he have been given replaced into as properly. it particularly is unhappy whilst an entire room crammed with people spit out that exact same answer in keeping with that query. Like Pavlov's canines, they have been knowledgeable to that reaction. What does that say for society ordinarily? Are Angelina Jolie or Steven Tyler black because of the fact they have enormous lips?????

No, it is not being racist to find a book on black poets and to check it out.
The dirty look is probably about something else.

That's a wierd situation. I don't think you are racist either way whether you check out the book or not. If you like Langston Hughes check out the book. They are fools giving you dirty looks. What stupidity.

I have no idea what you are saying. If you have to find Black poets look them up, no one cares if you do or if you dont. Just like no one would care if you had to look up British or Irish poets.
