First is to get one new that has all the latest technology. A fast processor, a large memory and as mobile as possible. I travel a lot. I never stay put in one place too long. To some extent you going to college will be the same. Classroom, dorm and home. I have a wireless card through my cell phone company that allows me to go on the internet anytime, anyplace I can get a signal (same as my cell phone). There will be dead areas but they too are fewer as time goes by. I do not have to be in a classroom, dorm or on the road in a motel loop to communicate. I have those options if needed. This Fall, Cingular, and I would imagine all the other cell phone companies too, will have a new card that will equal cable speed. Yesterdays computer technology can not keep up and interface with todays technology. So start out with new technology. It will not become outdated for awhile. Which brand is up to you. Look for sales. I picked up a new Sony Satellite for $800.00 on sale. Normal price was $1300.00. Good Luck here and in school

HP portable workstation. Not the one you buy at crcuit city. Order this one online from the small business part of HP's website. Get the 3 year next day service. You can't beat hp's service and students laptops fail frequently. You'll love the portable workstation's graphics and performance. nw8440 comes to mind. Remember macs don't run autocad and some other standard engineering / graphics. You're gambling if you buy a mac.

DEFINATLY go with the macbook. it has the fastest processor out there for laptops, most portable, and has a small screen but alot of pixles so everything is clear. you can get up to 200 gb so there is more than enough room for all of ur work, starting price is $1099.
