I'm embroidering a name on something and I've been practicing using I think a backstitch, but I'm not really sure. It works that way, but I was wondering what the correct stitch to use is.

I would use the backstitch if you are just putting a name on an article. If you are doing a monogram, then you would use a satin stitch. When I make baby blankets, I just put their name on with the backstitch.

Here is a web site with pictures and instructions for the stitches -- http://www.craftown.com/instruction/embroidery.htm

Depends on how big and how thick you want the name.

Satin - for a pretty filled in "thicker" looking name. I'd also tell you this is good for printed letters.

Fine Chain - for a more open looking name, but with letters that are "thicker". Works for either script or print letters.

Stem - is very flexible and pretty for "thinner" looking names. It works really good on script letters.

Back Stitch - works too, however I only use this if I want a very small/fine look to the letters.

Good Luck!!!
