Sales tax is expressed in percentages, so your percentage is 9-1/2%. Expressed in fractions, that is .095. Multiply that times the sales price to get the tax (.095 x 5.99). If you want total sales price with tax, either add the tax back to the 5.99, or multiply the sales prices by 1 plus the tax rate (1.095 x 5.99).

Just multiply the cost of the markers 5.99 x 1.095. The 1 is for the cost of the markers (after all you still have to pay for them)...1 basically being 100%. The .095 is the way you write 9.5% in decimals.

So 5.99 x 1.095 = 6.56

Proportion: put x over $5.99 (x/5.99) and then next to it put 9.5% over 100 (9.5/100) and then do 5.99 times 9.5 and divide that answer by 100 and get $.57. because x=.57so, you add the 57 cents to the $5.99 and get $6.56

5.99 times 1.095 would be your total. If you wanted just the tax, you would multiply by .095
$6.56 or $0.57 tax
