This depends on how you wish to do it. If you fly direct it will cost more than going through Germany, although any other country would increase the cost (don't ask why). Although New York is closer to the UK the cheapest airline is American so flying from Chicago is cheaper than Newark.

To Fly from Newark to London Heathrow via Frankfurt is $650
Newark Direct to London Heathrow is $705
JFK direct to London Heathrow is $715

Try expedia, orbitz, or priceline. This answer depends on where in the US you'll be flying from and what time of the year you're going. I just got back from a trip to England. My tickets were about $850, but I flew out from St. Louis. If you live in the northeast near Boston or New York then your ticket will usually be around $600. It is also much cheaper to visit the UK in winter, autumn, and spring. The summer is high season and can cost over a grand for airline tickets alone.

Also want to point out that exchange rates are horrible now because the dollar has fallen. You will only get half of the money you bring over, and the UK is very expensive.

It depends where you're flying from, when you're going, and which airline you take. I prefer British Airways- go directly to their website instead of tinkering around on travelocity or expedia, etc. As far as rates, it's cheapest to fly from NYC, and you'll also save money if you can leave on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. From Baltimore, I managed to book a roundtrip, nonstop flight in June-July for about 700 per person (including taxes, which are about 160 dollars per person).
