It depends on the kind of inventory. Is it completed products ready for sale by your company or parts needed to make your products or what you need to buy to keep your store well stocked.

I only know the store one. You have to know two things. How much can your supplier give you for one order? If your supplier sells in lots of 50 once a month and you need 100 for some months, you have to order ahead.

As for what you are selling, you have to keep a running inventory, keep track best you can of how many of each thing you sell a day so if their is an increase or decrease in demand you'll know. It also means working nights and counting everything to get an accurate count.

The best way to keep things accurate is shelf placement. Draw a diagram of where each thing is stored. Each day walk around and eyeball everything so you get to know by sight. Secondly take two or three items every day and count them, then another two or three items and count them. Then update your diagram with the numbers or comments daily. It helps you keep track of things until you do your formal inventory. But if your really want to keep inventory from being confused, you have to take an eyeball inventory everyday and count two or three items every day and the next day a different two or three things.
