What an interesting question! You know, I know that there are times when I hear what I want to hear, but I really try to work at not doing that. Many misunderstandings occur from hearing what we want to hear. Sometimes, though, an emotional state can make it hard for a person to hear what he or she doesn't want to hear. For example, I had a friend who was dating a guy who was mistreating her, but she wanted to believe he was a nice guy. He was really manipulative. So, it caused her to hear things only a certain way. Finally, she came out of it, thankfully!! Then she saw what we were seeing. I think we're all susceptible to it and we need to be cautious.

Given that it is impossible for you to know that all people fall into the category of "hearing what they want to hear and disregarding the rest" I can only assume you are projecting truths about yourself (that you don't want to face) outward onto others. You say "The so-called call for evidence is just a smoke screen" and "All the so-called evidence is 'all lies and jest'" - I'm sorry, but it is so clear that it is you who is only hearing what he wants to hear and disregarding the rest. Remember, isn't it your Jesus who says to take the log out of your own eye before you try to remove the speck from your brothers eye. Many of us actually don't just hear what we want to hear, some of us love truth more than answers. edit: You added: If evidence was all important, we wouldn't need to ensure impartial judges and juries. Evidence is anything that helps us make a decision but evidence is totally unimportant if we've already done that. That's fantastic - I'd hate to be navigating in a car you were driving especially if you made a wrong turn somewhere - I can just picture you ranting "Stop bothering me with evidence - I KNOW were going the right way." It's the bigger man who can admit when he's wrong.

Nope, I'm a staunch believer in the truth. I can deal with anything but deceit, denial and subterfuge.

Nope, I take it all in.
Unless it is like some major crisis, then I tune out and start thinking about random things to keep me occupied.

isn't that the whole point, you listen to what others say and if you like what you hear you take it with you, if you don't you tell them they suck and walk away.
