I was just noticing that there seems to be two types of people on Y!A: people who like newer music (My Chemical Romance,The Shins, 50 Cent, Rage Against The Machine, etc.) and people who like old music (Pink Floyd, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, The Rolling Stones, etc.)

Which do you personally prefer? Whatever genre you like, do you like music that is more recent or older, and why?

I personally prefer older music, perferably classic rock sine it's more relatablt to me. I'm a teen and I should be able to relate to these new bands, but I really don't relate to crying over my bf leaving me or something like that, but it's easy for me to relate to songs about death, and insanity (Pink Floyd). Most of the classic rock I listen to (Pink Floyd, Zep, Boston, Rush, Tom Petty, the Doors) has complex themes and a common thread throughout their songs in an album. It's more intelligent, in my opinion. The quality of the music (ie instrumentals and lyrics) are also better in the older music.

I Dislike Mainstream Music Because Theres No Real Rock There, We've Resorted To Putting A Pop Band Like Fall Out Boy In The Metal Section In Music Shops. Its Terrible. Im Going To Get So Many TD For This But I Don't Care. Theres Some Great Newer Bands But You Have To Dig Deep For Them Which Is A Shame. Rock Now Is Watered Down And Far Too Poppy, And I Dislike Most Of There Fans Too Because They All Follow This Silly Trend To Stay Cool. Hopefully, Rock Will Change. Theres Some Good New Metal Bands, But They Hardly Ever Get Any Radio Play Or Whatever. Which Is Why Now, People Walk Around Singing ''Shake, Shake, Shake It' And Think There Hardcore Rockers Just Because The Vocalist Has Tattoos. Q2: Im 15 Years Old And I Mainly Listen To The Old Stuff; Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Nazereth, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Etcc. I Can Go On Forever.

My music taste varies greatly. I like the blues, rock, jazz, classical, country and so on. However, one thing they all usually have in common is that the band/musician came out pre-1990. Now, don't get me wrong...there are a lot of musicians that came out in the 90's and 00's that I really love (they just aren't so well known). I'm young, so the music you listed as "newer music" is the music of my generation...which, to me, is quite sad. Music from 30+ years ago had more of a beat, more poetic lyrics, and just meant so much more. That's a time when a lot of musicians were in it for the music, and the money was just a major plus.

I grew up with the Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, Doors, Janis. All the classic artists. I still like their music and own much of it (records, tapes, CD's) but I would much rather listen to a new group.

I enjoy finding / discovering a "good" a new song now as much as I did when I bought a new album like "Sticky Fingers" or "The White Album". I have a good ear for what's going be popular. I like turning my kids on to music before they hear it.

Groups I like hearing now: Decemberists, Killers, Arcade Fire, Kaiser Chiefs, DCFC, Shins, Andrew Bird, Cold War Kids, Jack White (Stripes or Raconteurs), Keane, M Mouse.

Bonus: Going to Lollapalooza is much more fun if you know some of the bands.

It depends... For me old Pop is > New Pop... but I do enjoy some newer music... the problem is that the music industry is driven by money now and it doesn't matter if the person is talented or not if they look good or have a certain image to sell. That waters down creativity to the point that it hardly exist anymore and that's frustrating.

I personally prefer any music that coincides with the feelings you are going through and with whatever is going on.
If I feel nostalgic, I will usually listen to 80's and 90's music. If I need to get over something that pissed me off or need that extra bit of energy, I listen to an upbeat over the wall song. LOve my ipod by the way. :) To me it would ll depend what you need the music to do for you at the time!

older music, before the 90's. Music was just better back in the day, 50's and 60's and 70's and even alot of 80's, before rap and hip-hop took over and tried to say it was music. Its all a matter of taste and that is just not mine. I love rock, blues, soul, country and disco all older!

I like new to new-ish music. It doesnt have to be this year new, but i genereally dont listen to stuff beyond 1993. And the only things i listen to from the 90's are nirvana and third eye blind. But i will still give old stuff a chance if it's good.
