How can they "rag on you"? Are you hanging out in your former job? They are not allowed legally to bad mouth you to anyone calling about your former employment. The most they can say is that you did work there. Stop hanging around for them to keep complaining at you, and find another job.

Always have a friend or family member pose as a prospective employer to reference check before you give out that name and number.

When you give a reference you put your reputation on the line, If a person was a bad employee you would be silly to vouch for them, after all it is you reputation you are putting on the line for somebody who was in no way beneficial to the company. it is just silly for a poor employee to expect a shining recommendation.

well there is a little aspect of culture called reputation.
if your employer gives you a good reference and you
turn out to be a bad employee (like you were for them)
then they have lied and their reputation is bad.
I would NEVER give a good recommendation for a bad
employee. I always tell the truth. I do not lie. I am not going to lie
and ruin my reputation for someone who was not a good
employee for me. That's why we have the system of references.
you bad behavior follows you. consequences of your
behavior. and it's not my fault. i am just telling the truth
about my experience (i would not interpret it as 'ragging' on you)
