Many of the ideas are closely dependent on earlier 17th and 18c writers such as John Locke, David Hume, and JJ Rousseau. Also, particular parts came from previous documents such as some state and colonial charters and the writings of such savants as Roger Williams (the inventor of religious freedom in America) or the Mayflower Compact. Jefferson was a well educated person and knew all about all of these sources.
