because the reserves are for the military and not to lower gas prices. much of our reserve oil is not even refined. when the demand decreases and the supply increases, only then will prices go down.

I hope we don't. That would artificially decrease the price, there would be incentive to conserve. Gas is not at the right price yet, demand continues to rise despite the rise in price. Surveys indicate people won't cut back until the price hits $3.48/gallon, so the way I look at it, that is the fair price for gasoline.

There is also another problem, we are importing 17% of our REFINED gasoline. The oil reserve is oil, tapping into it will not increase supply of gasoline. The ONLY way to do that is to increase REFINED gasoline imports (bad idea) or build more refineries. But it take 20 years for a refinery to break even on its building costs (mainly environmental law suits and permits).

Its not a shortage of oil but of refining capacity. For 30 years the liberals, property owners and tree huggers have fought the building of new refineries, while gasoline use has gone up many times. Making it so easy for the oil companies to manipulate the supply in collusion with the speculators.

They won't... and the oil companies next year will be reporting record profit just like they did last year.
