I have a 96 firebird that did the same thing not long ago, I couldn't back it out of the driveway. It turned out to be a blown transmission gasket. You also could have a hose leaking or a loose clamp. Look underneath the car, do you have a red puddle? If so, you are leaking transmission fluid. Regardless, you are going to need a mechanic.

Not time for a "new fuel efficient car", because you won't get any mileage out of them.
It seems like this is a common problem, nothing really you can do aside from some transmission stop slip in there. Try some different ones, drop the plate and drain the fluid and change the filter (or have it flushed somewhere). This should do the trick. My friend's 'burban (1991 4wd, just like yours) had the same problem. If this isn't fixed with the stop-slip, contact me and I can let you know how he fixed his.

check the 4x4 shifter
change from 2 to 4 wd see if it will move
it could be in the transfer case instead of the trans
check the fluid

Sounds like the tranny said GOODBYE.
It may not be horrible to have repaired if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape.
You could gamble on a used tranny!
Or you could have yours rebuilt!
Good luck!

first things first check your fluid with engine warm and in park on level ground, if that's OK you might have a bad clutch pack or solenoid, or governor. either way it need to be rebuild or replaced, for a good 700r4 trans is about a 1,000. to rebuild it ain't that hard every thing fits in one way only. hope this helps, good luck.

well check for a fluid leak first.......then call a tow truck. there are several problems that could be wrong, none of which can be fixed in the driveway

Sounds like input housing failure to me which is common. I assume you checked fluid, and checked driveline.
