Just asking around, but who do you think was in the coffin that Jack went to go see? People I have talked to think it is either Ben or Locke. A couple of reasons for both. Jack is neither friend or family to either Ben or Locke. No one came besides Jack (implying no family), and that fits both Ben and Locke. A friend of mine said they saw a "J" on a sheet of paper in Jack's apartment ("J"ohn???). Also, Jack cried when he read the article in the paper. He could have been thinking of how John and Ben tried to stop Jack from leaving the island (which he regretted at the end of the episode, we found out). Just wondering what everyone else thought.

The article:

"The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue. Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft. Concerned for tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room. According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son. Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening."

I think the coffin is someone that we have not met yet. The coffin is also too short to be anyone we have met, even Walt.

To be honest, never really thought about it being Locke. I just assumed that had it been any of the Losties, at least one or two of them would have shown up to the funeral. I thought that maybe it might be Juliet (although she does have family, maybe after they were rescued she never got reunited with her sister). But I think the most likely candidate is Ben, for all the reasons you stated above. And Jack going to Ben's funeral sounds like a Jack thing to do, especially since he so clearly regrets leaving the island.

A couple of days ago someone asked close to the same thing and another person that answered found a website where they had posted a blown up version of the newspaper clipping and you could clearly make out the words Johnathan and a sentence saying he died in his apartment. I don't remember what website is was.....but hope that helps a little.

I think it's Ben because Kate had a somewhat negative response to the news of the death, and she has reasons to dislike Ben, but not Locke.

Somebody on lostpedia.com has suggested what the whole article said. In it, it said that the person was from New York and they survived by one teenage son. My money's on Michael. Micheal is the only character on the island from New York. And hello? He has a son, Walt. That's why Kate asked Jack why she would go, partially because Michael betrayed her.

I think it is Sawyer. His name is James which fits the "J". Also the fact that Jack met Kate at the end sort of hinted at the "triangle" of the three of them.
