File domestic violence charges and GET OUT! The next time it happens may be the last. This is your life you are taking chances with. You deserve better.

Just the first step toward smacking you upside the head.
You put the "he was mad at you" thing in parenthases.
Why?
Is that an attempt to justify his excuse for choking you?
Is that what he used to make it your fault he did that?
Of course he was mad at you. He isn't going to walk up to you, kiss you hello and then strangle you.
You are asking this question because you are wondering if you should dump him or not?
Seems obviouse to me, as you will see from all the other answers here.
I have been married for 18 years. When I get angry at her, I leave. I go off somewhere for an hour or so and cool off. Then I come back and sit down ready to talk.
BUT I NEVER RAISE MY HAND TO HER, NEVER!!!

That would be physical abuse, which is never OK under any circumstance. It should have been reported at the time. He is a ticking time bomb. If he was capable of doing it once, he will do it again.
Get out and get some help! Don't wait.

I would have called the police and had him arrested. And by the time he made bail, I would be GONE. What's to insure this person will not do the same thing again when he gets mad?

You need to exit this relationship ASAP. This is just one sign of physical abuse. It could easily and most likely will lead to worse abuse (including verbal) Once it starts, they (the abuser) don't have much control and they start to think that it's ok to abuse people. Get out now, before it gets worse.

I'd prepare myself to get out of the relationship (unless I was in a position to walk out on the spot).
Being mad is no excuse for physical violence.

I'd have filed charges on him and also gotten a restaining order. (<>)
My ex did this to me and I changed the locks on the house while he was mowing the yard...he comes to the door "I can't get in!" I said "You're right....your stuff is in your truck.....get out!" Then I hear, "I think I'm having a heart attack!" To which I replied...."Go ahead and die....cuz your a$$ will be cold, stiff and stinkin before I call an ambulance!" He left!

My ex did this to me, I reported him to the police, and left him, he immediately became my ex. Turns out he was actually mentally ill and needed medical help, but reporting him to the police was a start in getting him the help he needed. We never spoke again after that.

Not trust him again... why would he do that? it doesn't matter how mad he is, he still has no right to do that, what if next time that he gets mad at you he does it again? and you actually pass out?
