1.) I'm not convinced "soulmates" exist. I think there are people who are more compatible than others, but I don't think there is any one person you're meant to be with, and you'll never be fully satisfied in a relationship with anyone but that one person. Soulmates are a mystical, romantic invention of chick flicks and romance novels.
The idea of soulmates as the "one person you could ever give your heart to" is disproven more by people who believe in it than anything or anyone else. Say you're in a relationship with someone, and always talk about how that person is your soulmate. Then you break up and a little while later, you're with someone else, claiming THAT person is really your soulmate, you were wrong before. I've known people who have repeated that cycle five or six times in as many years. What that says to me is that either there is no such thing as soulmates (using the definition you used) or that we're all unconscious of who our soulmates are and honestly have no idea if the person we're with is our soulmate or not.
2.) I don't think your soulmate/spouse/significant other and your best friend should necessarily be exclusive of one another. ESPECIALLY if you buy into the concept of soulmates, how can you have a true soulmate and that person not be your best friend, the one person who understands and accepts you and is there for you more than anyone? I mean, am I wrong here? Isn't that kind of the definition of soulmate? And if you're in a relationship, whether you want to call it soulmate or not, you should be able to trust that person completely.
If you're in a relationship with a "soulmate" who you can't trust completely, then that person isn't your soulmate and you need to get out of that relationship. You don't just accept that the definition of soulmate mentions nothing about trust, and that the definition of best friend is the ONE person you can trust. It just doesn't make sense.
Okay, wording aside, I have a husband and I have a few best friends. I would choose my husband. I love him, he loves me, my best girlfriends are hours away in opposite directions, we have two children, and he IS my best friend, even more than my best friend from elementary school. That's how it's supposed to be.

No choice here, BF as "soulmate" is in the same category as Bigfoot, Chupacabras and women who find me attractive...
