I would definitely get a filter that you can adjust the current on,bettas don't like a strong current and could actually be injured by it.I have a whisper filter but I think the current is to strong for a betta(It's on one of my other tanks)my bettas tank has a Elite hush 5,it just has a little knob at the top so I can turn the current down nice and low for him.

I would use a small internal filter containing sponge/s and a small amount of biomedia for the bacteria to live in. Rena make something called 'biochem stars' which are ideal for small filters. Just one star is equivalent to 20 normal biomax (white tubes), so by adding even one will drastically improve your filteration. Make sure sponge is the first thing the water flows through after entering the filter, then the biomedia last, this means that the large lumps of waste will get trapped in the sponge, leaving the bacteria living in the biomedia relatively unblocked enabling them to function efficiently. Make sure all the filter media is washed in dirty tank water and not under a tap.

Personally I like the Whisper PF-10, but several other brands have small models suitable for a 4.5 gallon tank.

Sponge filters work fine for me. They help cultivate good bacteria in your tank that will break down poop and stuff, and they have produce almost no waterflow which is the best for your betta.
