Hello guys. I had to ask this question because I wanted to know if it was true or false. Because I constantly hear different things. My favorite car color is black but I live in Las Vegas where it gets really hot in the summers. I wanted to know if a black colored car really gets hotter inside than a lighter colored car. Some people tell me that it's more what color the interior of the car is rather than the exterior of the car. For anyone that knows the truth, l'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

You can easily answer your own question. As you walk through a parking lot that is exposed to the sun lightly lay your hand on the hood of a white car,...very warm. Now, lightly lay your hand on the hood of a black car,...yeowch!! But with air conditioning they both cool the same with the black taking a bit longer. It areas prone to rust a black car will be more resistant to rust because the sheetmetal of the car attains a temperature high enough to disipate moisture. Without AC the white car will definately be cooler in summer.

A black car's metal skin will hold and transfer more heat into the interior than a lighter color will--regardless of the interior color...had a black 75 Monte Carlo and it was a bear to drive the first 20 minutes till the a/c cooled it off....luckily, it had a sunroof to vent the hot air quicker. Park in the shade as much as possible (in Vegas?) or get a remote start system installed and start the car with a/c on high 10-15 minutes before you get in. Have a sunroof installed and leave it cracked open a little. I've also seen devices that hook over your window that use solar power to operate a small fan and exhaust the hot air inside your car, keeping it relatively cooler than if you didn't have one.

The truth is, darker colors don't reflect heat as well. End of story. They will both get as hot inside. But the lighter colored vehicle will cool down faster. Simply a matter of load on the a/c system, the more heat absorbed, the longer and harder to be rid of it. So basically a white car will get cooler faster than a black car, all other things being equal.

It's a combination of both, really. Black paint will make the entire car hotter as black absorbs more heat. A black interior will concentrate more heat on the interior than black paint would, but between them both... and Las Vegas... you will be miserable.

Oh yeah... black LEATHER interior is MUCH WORSE than black cloth. you can actually get serious burns if you sit on black leather on a hot summer day while wearing shorts. not fun.

fact. dark colors absorb sunlight instead of reflecting it. black is the darkest so the car will get really hot.
