The money is big in television news, so the idea is to attract viewers. The way they think that should be done is to give plenty of stories, so that viewers' attention spans aren't stretched. Besides, if a subject bores a viewer, the producer doesn't want anyone to change the channel.
That also has led to a lowering of standards, as people want to talk the way the viewers do, instead of being above them. Sometimes people should be told what they need to hear, and not just want they want to hear.

Because of the point you make and the fact that most media only report negative news or Hollywood I have quit watching.
Would like to see stuff on news and in paper about the good we are doing all over the world. IE: fighting medical issues in Africa, building utilities and schools in Iraq, etc.
The media has quit reporting the news and only shows what they think will sell. They don't listen to the people and what news we want truth and factual reporting about.
Bet you heard about Anna Nicole Smith - the drug addict that died. Do you know the name of the USMC CH-46 pivot that died the same day, while flying a mission in Iraq?

I could not agree with you more. One newsreader sat at a desk reading the news in correct English would be bliss. A news programme that reports the facts without indulging in useless speculation would be heaven. A broadcast that does not show reporters standing outside a building (eg No10) when their contribution could be read by the main newsreader would be paradise.

Yes it is being dummbed down;;
By the over use of graphics and by the inclusion of tabloid style journalism......ITN news showed a whole clip from You Tube about Bush and Blair and I thought do we need newscasters to pick and choose Internet Content on news that we pay for?
The reading style on channel five is a bit ott in the accentuation and elongation of syllables and phrases....
I prefer the american news more actually and channel four because they just get to it....

I agree - and I'm relieved to see that I'm not alone on this! I can't stand all the exaggeration and opinion that gets into the headline reports these days. Those who write the autocue scripts seem to think they are constructing plots for EastEnders.
Just simply read the news, newscasters, you are not Jeremy Sodding Kyle.
