Does anybody know why whale sharks are washing up on beaches. I'm doing a report on them. Thanks for the help.

It is not something that happens that often. As far as why it tends to be the same reason that toothed whales, other fish and deep sea creatures do the same.

To make it simple... a full grown whale shark is massive, 40 feet long on avg... when they begin to die, depending on the condtion they tend to do one of two things. Sink or just the opposite, float. If they are unable to dive and have trouble swimming they are just going to move with the current and end up on the beach.

Overall they really do not wash up too often though.

I would question where you got the information that whale sharks were washing up on beaches. I did a quick search and could find no articles talking about an unusual number of whale sharks washing up on beaches. In fact, I found no articles at all.

Whale sharks are rare, especially in the greater than 12 meter category, so if one did wash up somewhere, it would certainly make the news, and if they were washing up frequently it would be covered very well especially in the scientific community.
