I don't know what you need to know. I watch them all the time, Netlix has a great selection. I just got thru with The Three Musketeers. I can tell you that they were full length stories, lasting 1 1/2 to 2 hours for full stories. The acting was grand gesture style. Lots of arm flaying and very emotional expressions. Lon Chancy was an exception, I think. He was years ahead of the others in more subtle acting. There was some color used in some of the bigger pictures, like The Phantom of the Opera and Ben Hur. Since there was no sound, music was often sent with the movie so that the house piano player could play a standard soundtrack.
The technology was crude, actually developed in the 1860's but didn't come into what we would recognize as movies until the late 1910's.
The cinematography was actually quite good, but the films were allowed to deteriorate and most are not unwatchable. There is a huge volume of silent movies that exist, many more than people realize. The common misconception is that they are incompatible with today's equipment to watch or of too poor quality to reproduce.
Dramas and comedies, as well as documentaries. Some of the biggest stars and directors of Hollywood got their start in silents.

There are still some silent films that you can see on dvd, many of the classics have endured, primarily the comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. There are a few dramas that remain, most notably Metropolis and Birth of a Nation, which was very controversial because of its subject matter.

I do watch them sometimes on TCM - they run them previous due at night and that i will watch on the weekends. I could desire to be in a undeniable temper to appreciate them. i will not be able to be too drained because of the fact then that's too plenty attempt to study the subtitles. I do appreciate Charlie Chaplin continually!
