I have seen so many different answers,

some sites say only freshwater, others say they are brackish.

Which it right?

I currently have a figure eight dwarf puffer. My fish tank is strictly freshwater, however I also added a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons. Its generally a good idea, because it allows the tank to be more stable. However, the previous answers about puffers tearing apart other fish is negative. It really depends on the attitude of the fish. My little puff is absolutely cute, and he isn't in any way shape or form aggressive. They aren't necessarily brackish, they just thrive better with a little salt in their tank. I would go for the investment, because the salt doesn't evaporate, the water does. Its a good idea to. Hope this helps.

No they are not freshwater fish. please don't listen to these people. They live in freshwater shallows that are brackish (slightly salty). When the tide comes in, the water reaches levels of salinity equal to that of ocean water. I have 3 puffers in my Reef tank with corals right now. 1 Dwarf and 2 Figure-Eights. They were purchased in freshwater at the store and it only took an hour for them to get used to the salt. They prefer slightly salty water but can survive in anything from fresh to sea water.

Most websites you read about them will be wrong. They are written by people who don't know what they are talking about. Look for a puffer forum online and ask the experienced users there. Few people know what puffers actually require for care.

They are freshwater, just as the majority of the answerers said. But adding a LITTLE salt wouldn't hurt.

I assume you're talking about Carinotetraodon travancoricus, which is what Petsmart sells. Fish base has them listed as freshwater. It can survive with FW aquarium salt in the water, but it is not necessary.
