Floating plants will use various nutrients from the water including nitrates and phosphates. This will help keep algae under control. In addition to that they provide cover for shy or small fish and are a potential food source for many species. They will also provide a small shaded area for the fish to enjoy. Loads of pluses to using a few floating plants.

Floating plants will help your water chemistry loads. They absorb Phosphates and Nitrate which are abundant in an established tank sine Aerobic bacteria produce Nitrates when converting Ammonia to Nitrite and Nitrite to Nitrate.

Also algae feeds off Phosphates so reducing your levels will slow agae growth considerably.

Floating plants are great for fry to hide in, also help with nitrites and algae. Live plants are all ways a good idea for your tank! They also make your tank look nicer!

I have an underwater ivy in my tank. It doesn't float, it sits on a rock. My fish love it. The underwater plants are supposed to help the tank with oxygen and cleaner water. I don't know about all that. I just know my fish like to swim in and out of it.
