I am thinking about renting one or using one that a friend of mine has.

It depends on if all the parts can be sterilized or replaced, and that is not the case with all styles of breastpumps.
Click on links below (same site, different pages) for more info (the second link contains a list of breast pumps that can be used by multiple users, and a list of pumps that should only be used by one person):

This is just one of many websites I have come across regarding the safety of used breast pumps.

I'm actually going to give you an intelligent answer! First off, contrary to what people have been answering, there are risks. You CAN get an infection for used pumps. There is a trick though. Just buy the pump and throw away everything else if it was used. Medela brand pumps are the best, just buy a used pump for $75-100 on ebay and just use the pump part itself. Buy all new collection bottles, tubes and such. You're hospital should have a breastfeeding center that you can purchase these things at. Or try online. Just remember to get new tubes and stuff. If you buy a used pump and new everything else it shouldn't cost you more than $100-$150 or so. Rather than $300-400 new!

I had a lot of problems breastfeeding my son. I didn't want him to have formula so I pumped exclusively and fed my son only bm for the past six months. I pump about 8 times a day.

When I was pregnant I asked this same question on a preggo board because I knew I needed a heavy duty pump to get the job done and most are upwards around $300. Everyone gave me the same answer (don't buy used). So I went out and spent a small fortune because I didn't think a use one was the way to go. But, it can be.

The problem with sharing a breast pump is that milk can back up into the compressor and yuck it all up. I used my Medela Pump In Style for 6 months now upwards of 10 + times a day at times. And I have never had my milk back up into the unit. EVER!

I would suggest buying a used one. I would have if I would have known this. All you have to do is buy all new tubes, collection bottles and such. JUST USE THE ACTUAL PUMP! The ones you can rent from the hospital are okay for multiple users. They make you buy a kit that contains the bottles, suction cups, membranes (for medela) and such. So it is possible.

Technically, you should not reuse a pump. However, I think if it's been cleaned and you know the previous owner, it might be alright. You can get replacement parts for the parts that actually touch your breasts/breastmilk. :)

A hospital grade pump that is rented out has been sterilized and should be fine.

If you read the manufacturer's recommendations, it will say not to do that because "technically" not all parts are able to be sterilized, however the parts that you can't sterilize don't even come in contact with the milk. My doctor said it's ok as long as you clean it very well and sterilize it before you use it. If you're renting one, then it is hospital quality and all parts are able to be sterilized and that's kosher.

Yes there are lot's of risks to using a used breast pump. You can contract any disease that the last users had. It would be in your best interest to just go out and buy you one.

Wash the parts they tell you to, boil any parts they tell you to, and you'll be fine.
I have been a nurse a long time and never heard of any one getting an infection from their pump.

hi. i don't think so. It's still your breast milk , you are just pumping it, it still contains nutrition that a baby needs. I would suggest putting it in bottle and feeding it to your baby. but i would suggest that you feed your baby your breast milk without pumping it. babies are cute when they are drinking milk. but if you have too much milk
(that's all running down, getting you wet), then i would suggest it.

no risk if you sterilize the tubes and the bottles and the breast sheilds.
