Bats can eat their body weight in insects daily. This is good for ridding your land of mosquitoes and other pests. I live rural, and a lot of farms put up "bat boxes" (providing shelter) to encourage them to stick around.
On the other hand, they are notorious for carrying rabies. Also, they can spread other diseases if they habitate indoors (en masse), from their urine and feces.
You also need to consider the health and well-being of the animal. Does it have easy access to the outdoors so that it can find food and water? If you have pets, especially cats - being trapped inside gives it virtually no chance of escape should your pet decide to kill and eat it. (this could also spread disease to your pets).
I would recommend getting it out of your garage. Leave the door open for an evening or two to let it out on its own, or call animal control if you're not comfortable (and able) to safely remove it yourself.

finding a brown bat in your home isnt a sign of bad luck its more a sign of you either need to shut your windows at night or you may just need to clean up a bit around the house especcially around the garage since thats where you found it. Bats also turn into supernatural, nocturnal beings that suck your blood you better be careful...

You shouldn't be scared from a mythological viewpoint but from a health one, that is another story. Bats can carry rabies. Recently in the Houston area a teenage boy died of rabies from a bat that bit him as he slept with his bedroom window open.

No. It's more afraid of you than you are of it. Mr. or Ms. Bat means no harm whatsoever. Just needs a place to call home.

Well, those little critters DO carry rabies, so if I were you, I would contact your local animal control office. They will come out, take it away, and relocate it.
As far as I know (at least I've never heard) of any superstitions involving them in your home.

Just leave it alone...it is harmless, except if it has rabies. Light the place up if you want it to find another place to stay.
