Does that mean they expect me to generate my own credit report or what? I never had to do this before, but I was under the impression the criminal check, credit check, etcetera was performed by the other party. If this is the case, could you refer me to any professional standards?

The other party will take care of all the background checks. The credit reference will be a source they can contact to verify the accuracy of the information you are providing.

It means they want the name and phone number of someone who will vouch that you will pay your bills on time...ie a former roommate or land lord. They will pull a credit report and a criminal records check on their own after they get the application fee.

Because companies can, thanks to a section in the Fair Credit Reporting Act that says credit reporting agencies can furnish your consumer report to someone who intends to use the information for employment purposes.

Employers insist there are valid reasons for credit checks:

1.Retail sales means access to money and merchandise.
2.Working payroll means access to company accounts.
3.Banking means access to both money and customer information. Consumer identities have been stolen that way.
4.Businesses figure someone who's deeply in debt may be more tempted to steal.

If it's for a job application, they're the ones paying for it, not you. And if they dare try to ask you to do so, then run.

No just list someone(s) who you have rented from in the past, or had small loans through.

They are the ones paying and asking for it, not you.
