To catch or to avoid?

To avoid: don't worry. The Copperhead is about the least aggressive of all venomous snakes, shy, and well-camoflagued. They inflict very, very few bites, even though they are very common near people in many parts of their range.

To catch: hang out with people who know what they are doing. If you don't know where to look, you really are not quite ready to catch them. A little training is very helpful!

Unless the snake moves, you probably won't see it at all. They are wonderfully camoflaged animals. I've actually had my foot within inches, easy striking distance if it wanted to bite me-of an adult Copperhead, and the only way I noticed it was that the movement of its bright pink-orange tongue flicking caught my eye. I was more or less disobeying my own advice at the time, and walking through heavy leaf litter off the beaten path, though, and unless you're wearing snake-proof boots, that's not a good idea.

According to Robert Winkler in his book "Reclining with Vipers": "Most people who go to the woods never see a copperhead, because the snake either remains motionless in its red and brown camouflage or senses through the ground the vibrations of an approaching hiker and slithers away."

IT IS NOT EASY....look for a pile of leaves...they like it near wood and rotting leaves...two things to remember...and these are deadly important....they smell like rank trash...and they never are alone...there is usually always a pair of them...so look for two not one...and look at piles of leaves till you see the diamond shape head among them...good idea...leave them be...they bite.
