I want to change all my documents (except pictures, movies, programs) to a standard format so that it can be viewed on any computer. Excel documents can't be viewed on computers that don't have Office. Would PDF or XPS be a better choice?

I use PDF as a document standard in our office, everything is PDF as all our customers has the ability to download Acrobat as a reader for free.

Excel doc can be viewed without Office - but only if your reader has downloaded the (free) Excel viewer. Same problem with PDF - you have to hope your reader has downloaded the Adbobe software, which you can't guarantee.

There's no easy answer to this one. I'd say just stick with the defaults you have. If someone doesnt have Excel and needs to view your file, tell them to download OpenOffice which is excellent, free, and can read all of Microsoft's document formats.

I personally would go for PDF as it seems to be a lot more widely supported than XPS.

Just remember to have PDF viewing software (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader) on the computers you wish to read your files on.
