Why not be a bit of both.

Well now ... I've just lost my badge, having absented myself from the internet for three weeks. Notwithstanding that I still have more best answers in the languages section of Answers Italia than anyone else. How do you think I feel about that? A little bit put upon, yes. But above all ... relieved! Free at last! To say what I think, to have a laugh. I feel like a great burden of responsibility has been lifted from me. The badge is an honour, yes, and there's reason to be proud of it if you've earned it fairly by giving good answers. But that pride brings an obligation to carry on living up to the reputation you've earned, and that's a weight to carry. You can't just take a holiday for a couple of weeks. You can't go shooting your mouth off. Worst of all, you'll find that it stirs up resentment from many other users wherever you go. They see that badge, and they don't see orange, they see red. They will assume that you are hand in glove with the mods. They will assume that you have set yourself up as a kind of playground prefect and that you think you're better than they are. You will get lots of thumbs down for no other reason than because your avatar wears that badge. You will find it much harder to get awarded best answer, because many questioners will consider you a sort of "official" answerer and they will think it's unfair to give you best answer, even if it is the best. You will find it's tough at the top. To be honest with you, I don't know if I want my badge back. I'm happy just to be an ordinary user again - at least for a month or so. Enjoy the glow of satisfaction while you can. When it becomes a millstone, take a holiday and dump it. In the meanwhile, don't let it go to your head and don't react to the jealousy and resentment you will come up against.

I'd say Proud. There is a lot of bilge that is posted on this site, but it is supposed to be representative of all public opinion, so you must have worked hard to contribute so many answers, even if old fogeys such as myself condemn them to contumely!

It is so rare for anyone to give anyone else thanks for anything these days. Revel in it. Some witless creep (probably the Prime Minister/President) will soon try to do you down.

It depends on the type of answers you give on whether you should feel proud or ashamed. And, you must be on here a lot.

Contrary to popular belief, they aren't given out due to the amount of time spent here. So go ahead and CONTINUE feeling proud. (you wouldn't have asked the Q if you were any where near ashamed and you know it!!) ;-)

Just roll with it. I wish I knew what I did to get mine.... I just logged on one day and there it was! It looks nice and all under my picture, like I ought to know what I'm talking about. But deep down, I'm just afraid people will thumbs-down me all the time just because they see a little orange stripe. Or worse, find petty ways to report me...
