I know that in American cars, first gear is on the top left and fifth gear is on the top right, but how do they do it in British cars? Thanks. Cheers.

It will be on the left side. Top or bottom, depending upon the design of the gearbox. Most are on the top, but a few are on the bottom with 2 through 5 filling out the standard 'H' pattern.

Gear shift design is the same on both RHD and LHD vehicles.
