I agree with Senator on Sawchuk but I wouldn't go so far as to say Roy and Hasek aren't CLOSE. And I think that Roy is better than Hasek or Brodeur because I've seen him carry 2 teams to the Cup on his back ('86 and '93 Canadiens). Not to take anything away from Marty but he has a stifling defense in front of him.Just keep in mind that goaltending didn't start in the 80's...there are plenty of excellent goalies who aren't named Roy, Hasek or Brodeur.
Hall, Plante, Dryden, Parent...

It's two different questions.

Over a career -- you could make a case for Roy, Brodeur or Sawchuk. All were good for a long, long, long time.

Over a season or a particular game -- Hasek has to be in the discussion somewhere. You'll never see better goaltending that his work in the late 1990's. You can add plenty of others of course. Bernie Parent had some great seasons. Considering no one in front of him cared about defense, Grant Fuhr played awfully well for the Oilers. And son on.

I would say Patrick Roy if the question was, "Who is the most overrated goalie of all time?". He played for two teams in his career, the first was coached by the inventor of the neutral zone trap and the second had talent that rivaled some of the all-time great teams. Roy was a solid goalie, but his statistics are buoyed by the players that were skating in front of him.

I'd say Terry Sawchuk or Jacques Plante

As far as more contemporary goalies are concerned, Hasek was the best that I have ever seen. He spent most of his career playing with inferior talent in Buffalo and every year he took them farther into the play-offs than they deserved. He also shut down team USA, Canada and Russia in the 1998 Olympics and brought the gold back to the Czech republic.

Added - Tretiak is another one that gets overlooked a lot. Its hard to compare him to anyone because he only played for the Soviets.

Terry Sawchuk, without a doubt. Look him up. Roy/Hasek aren't even close. This guy had the best stats, and did it with less padding than goalies today.

As far as goalies today go, I would say Martin Brodeur is better than Roy or Hasek, but Hasek is better than Roy (when they were in their prime)

EDIT- Take in mind that Sawchuk played most of his career without even a mask. Seriously tough guy.

To say who was the best goalie ever they would all have to play behind the same team for a time. A goalie for a wide open team will allow more goals than a goalie for a defensive team. does the defence block shots, is the defence screening the goalie, does the defence keep it wide open so the goalie can see the shots???? There are so many variables. But my answer is............Johnny Bower

A rookie at 33 years old but went on to win 4 cups and a Vezina. This is the stuff docudramas are made of, most players are retired by the age he started.

I don't know why or how we can overlook Dryden or Parent, maybe not the greatest of all time but they both have to be on the short list.

I don't know how you can put Hasek in front of Roy either, the numbers just don't compare.

Roy is better than Hasek. But Brodeur in his prime is better than Roy in his prime.

All time best... Sawchuck.
