I'm so disappointed to hear this story.Us old people as you call us, have been discussing trying to bridge the generation gap for a few days now.
You've had a very upsetting experience and I can only say that not every older person would have been so rude. I think most of us would appreciate any help we could get nowadays.
We know that not every youngster is disrespectful, you sound a very caring person.
Why don't you take a peep on the seniors page and learn a bit about us. You never know some one might even make you a cup of cocoa and offer you a biscuit. More like a barcardi and coke if I have anything to do with it. lol
So put the episode to the back of your mind and come and see if we can change your mind. You'd be suprised what recycled teenagers get up to when they are out spending their kids inheritance! take care x

I still think that good manners are not in short supply, but bad manners have increased substantially. We have definitely become less formal than our predecessors, and life moves at a faster pace, but most people still take the time for a small acknowledgement. I notice the lack of this mostly in the under-20s, and I suspect it says more about parenting than about the kids themselves. However it's certainly not universal, and is just part of the spectrum of society. I recently came across a group of, well, uncouth jack-the-lad types ("neds" in the local parlance) walking along a path, throwing litter everywhere while swearing like troopers. I'm not vastly older than them, but found myself grumbling about the "youth of today". Minutes later, walking through the grounds of the local university, I came across some others of the same age, politely but enthusiastically selling cup cakes to finance their trip to Borneo to do some ecological research. I was so impressed I bought the lot and left a big tip! Of course then I had to figure out how to get rid of all those cakes as I'm not so keen on them... Thus I think we have a spectrum in society, and good manners are still in healthy supply as part of that spectrum.

I regularly use the bus (I'm 30) I often come across elderly people with shopping trollys..I have a child in a pushchair, and they look at me, as if I shouldn't be there!
I even heard one woman saying, 'they should make them take their puschairs down'..I have EVERY right to use the bus, they make 'walk on buses' for a reason, not JUST for old people and their shopping trolleys!

She may have been deaf and not heard you approach and also in a lot of pain from arthritis, rheumatism or bunions or something after all that shopping, and was probably already irritated and embarrassed at making such a hash of getting her trolly off the bus, not that she had any right to speak to you as she did. I'll bet she's really sorry now.

You did the right thing, and never stop doing it...
This old lady may have had mental health issues, ie alziemers..etc.
Some older people do assume that all youngsters are trouble but infact there is only a small minority that are.
There are always going to be people you come up against that have no manners, are disrespectful and unkind, but as long as you always do the right thing, you can hold your head up high and hey, you will always have good karma around you.

It's rare to see a young person with that kindness and manners and it's also very reassuring. I'm so sorry for you that you're good deed was rejected but don't let it stop you being a nice person . In the goodness stakes that's priceless but there is a saying "A good deed never goes unpunished." a sad fact of being nice is that some people never ever will get the idea that it's nice to be nice.....Keep it up......................Star for your effort ( wish I could give more )

She sounds like one of those older people who've become bitter and frightened by most of the outside world. Don't take it to heart. You did a good, noble thing by trying to give her a hand and help her out. Keep doing nice things for people- eventually you'll be repaid in kind.

Perhaps she thought you were going to run off with it! I know what you mean though, sort of the same thing happened to me! Just let em get on with it....
You sound like a really nice person anyway,I hope you don't lose sleep over it. It is sad when you try to help people and they don't trust you. :)

don't worry, I find its alot of older people that always let the door go in your faces, they never look round to see if anyone is there before they let the door go. Not all are like it though, alot of old people come into the cafe that i work in and some are really polite and friendly. But we have to be careful what we say as we have to get old yet and who knows what we willbe like.

it's rude innit. the old people are usually the ones who just let a door close in your face when you're struggling to get through with a pram and 2 other kids. i always hold doors open etc., but the older people just don't seem to care. at least you know you did the right thing hon.
