The ring that Bilbo the Hobbit had for many years is found to be the One Ring of Sauron and his only weak point. Frodo, Bilbo's heir sets out to Rivendell to learn what is to be done.

After many adventures, Frodo reaches Rivendell, learns that the Ring must be destroyed in the fire of Mt. Doom and vows to undertake the mission. A Fellowship of Hobbits, men, Elves and Dwarves and Wizards set forth to unmake the Ring.

After a long journey, not without its share of tragedy, the Fellowship breaks apart on border to Gondor and its members go in all directions to fulfill their destinies.

Bilbo, the main character of the Hobbit, is turning 111. His old friend Gandalf comes back for the Birthday Party. During his speech at his b-day party Bilbo puts on the Ring and turns invisible, intending to leave w/o being noticed. Gandalf catches up w/ him at his house, convincing him to leave the Ring behind. G leaves it in the care of Bilbo's nephew Frodo and tells him to keep it hidden while he goes off it search for information.

Years later G shows up saying that Frodo has got to take the Ring to Rivedale so people there can figure out what to do with it. Frodo sets off w/ his bff/gardener Samwise Gamgee while G goes off to talk w/ his Wizard friend Saruman about what to do w/ the Ring (G is also a Wizard) Trouble is brewing in Mordor, and G finds out Saruman has been corrupted by Sauron the Dark Lord. Meanwhile Frodo and Sam meet up with Perrigrin Took and Meriadock (sp?) Brandybuck (Pippin and Merry), totally by accident, and on their journey the run into Barrowrights (who try to kill them) and Tom Bombadil (who's this cool little dude who lives in the Old Forest) and eventually make it too Bree where Frodo and the gang are supposed to meet up w/ Gandalf. Well as I said, Saruman is corrupted and takes G captive, so he doesn't show. The Hobbits then meet Strider who is a friend of Gandalf, they know this from a letter G left there, and he takes them the rest of the way to Rivendale. On the way, they're attacked by the Nazgul (they were once kings a verylong time ago, but they've been corrupted by Sauron). Frodo gets injured, Strider is trying to get him to Elrond ASAP so he can heal him, they are about to be attacked by Nazgul again, and Glorfindel shows up (he's an elf) and puts Frodo on his horse, horse runs back to Rivendel, it's all good.

Elrond holds a council, he tells a very long story of how they got into this mess w/ the evil Ring, G says some words in the tongue of Mordor, everyone cringes, Boromir talks about a dream he's been having, Gimli talks about Nazgul, Legolas talks about Gollum, Strider aka Aragorn is *dramatic music* heir to the thrown of Gondor, and they all argue about what to do w/ the Ring. Frodo volunteers to do it, everyone volunteers to go with him (everyone being Gimli, Leggy, Aragorn, G, Merry, Pippin, Boromir and Sam).

They set off south towards Mordor, they end up having to go through a old, evil-infested mine (Kahzadum aka Moria) since all the other paths are blocked. They get attacked by orks, goblins, and a Balrog, an evil creature that dwarves accidentally unleashed a long time ago. Everybody escapes but G who dies fighting the Balrog. They all get to Lothlorien, an elf city/haven/thing, the elves there don't trust dwarves (Gimli) so the gang has to go blindfolded. Everyone gets their hearts tested by Galadriel the Lady of the Golden Wood. She gets tempted by the Ring, but resists and therein earns her right to go across the sea to Valinor.

The fellowship leaves downriver, Frodo goes for a walk, Boromir goes after him and tries to attack him because the ring has twisted his mind, the group gets attacked by Uruk-hai (super-orks), they all fight, but they're all seperated. Boromir finds Merry and Pippin, they fight the UH but Boromir ends up getting shot down by arrows, M&P get carried off. Sam finds Frodo trying to leave alone in the boats, tells him he's comin too, and they set off for Mordor together. Aragorn, Gimli, and Leggy find Boromir and have a funeral for him.

THE END OF BOOK ONE.
