I am taking vicodin for a really bad tooth ache just untill I get to a dentist tomorrow. I know it wears off in 6 hours, does that mean I can breastfeed my son 6 hours after I take one? I am going to be taking one every six hours ( or after I breastfeed- if I can) and he has never had formula before - what do I do to be safe?

you may want to call your physician to be sure, but after I had a c-section, I alternated vicodin with ibuprofen 800mg. the pain relief was MUCH greater than vicodin alone, and my doctor had no concerns for me taking either (she knew I was breast feeding).

That is a very heavy pain killer. Contact your pediatrician and La Leche League to make sure you can use Vicodin. The pharmacist usually knows what is safe to take while breastfeeding too.

I'm on it too and my paper from the pharmacy says- Based on information from related drugs, this drug may pass into breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the infant, consult your doctor before breast-feeding." I wouldn't breast-feed if it was my baby.
