here's how I got that.............

(y-8) x 8 = (y-6) x 6
8y - 64 = 6y - 36
..... add 64 to both sides.......
...... subtract 6y from both sides ........
2y = 28
y = 14

(x-8) * 8 = (x-6) * 6

Distribute the number outside the parenthesis to everything inside the parenthesis.

8x-64=6x-36
+64= +64

8x = 6x + 28
-6x=-6x

2x = 28
/2 = /2 (Divide by 2)

x=14

so you are saying

(x-8).8 = (x-6).6

or
8x-64 = 6x - 36

subtract 6x from both sides
2x -64 = -36

add 64 to both sides
2x = 64-36

divide both sides by 2
x = 28/2

x=14

let the number=x
8(x-8)=6(x-6)
8x-64=6x-36
2x=28
x=14
may easily verify the answer.
